Lord Russell of Liverpool visited students from ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø to talk about the work of the House of Lords, and their role in it, as part of the popular ‘Learn with the Lords’ programme.

During the visit today, Friday 24 January, Lord Russell spoke to students on a range of topics including their journey into politics and the role the House of Lords has in the passing of laws, holding the government to account and making recommendations to the government on a range of topics through its committee work.
Lord Russell has been a member of the House of Lords since December 2014, and is also currently Deputy Speaker (Lords) and Deputy Chairman of Committees (Lords), sitting on the Secondary Legislation Scrutiny Committee.
Taking place live at Hammersmith & Fulham College, students from Ealing Green College and Southall Community College were also able to participate live through our inter-connected immersive classrooms.
Upon arrival, Lord Russell of Liverpool was greeted by students from Uniformed Public Services, who performed a ceremonial parade. This was followed by canapes and refreshments, served by students from Hospitality and Catering. Live entertainment was provided by students currently studying at The Rhythm Studio, which is based on-site at Hammersmith & Fulham College.
After the presentation, Lord Russell spoke to students who shared their positive experiences of contacting local MPs, including Rupa Huq MP and Andy Slaughter MP, and how much more knowledge they now have about the UK parliamentary system.
Tafina Davidson, Head of Learner Experience at ºÚ¹Ï³ÔÁÏÍø, said: “Having Lord Russell of Liverpool visit us was a truly wonderful experience that will have a lasting impact on our students. Their insights and wisdom provided invaluable learning opportunities, and the session was a testament to the immense value of the Learn with the Lords programme in educating young people about how the UK works.
