GCSE Physics gives students the chance to gain a good understanding of Energy, Electricity and Space Physics. The specification integrates the principles of ‘Working Scientifically’ throughout the topics in required practicals. The course gives students the context of how science is applied in the outside world by real scientists.
The course follows the New 9-1 grade system. Topics covered:
- Energy
- Electricity
- Particle model of matter
- Atomic structure
- Forces
- Waves
- Magnetism and electromagnetism
- Space physics (physics only)
10 required practicals are included such as:
- Specific heat Capacity
- Waves
- Radiation
The practical elements contribute 15% towards the total marks of the examination.
Independent Learning Tasks are also given throughout the topics.
You will need:
- GCSE English and maths at grade 3 (D) or above or Functional Skills Level 2 accepted
- Equivalent qualifications or experience accepted
- If you do not have any formal qualifications, you must pass an entry exam.
- Successfully complete an interview with a course tutor
- A satisfactory reference may be required
In preparation for the exams you will be assessed throughout the year on independent learning tasks, practicals, class performance and mock exams.
Two end of year exams will take place in May / June.
Topics assessed in Paper 1:
- Energy
- Electricity
- Particle model of matter
- Atomic structure
Topics assessed in Paper 2:
- Forces
- Waves
- Magnetism and Electromagnetism
- Space Physics
Questions in paper 2 may draw on an understanding of energy changes and transfers due to heating, mechanical and electrical work and the concept of energy conservation from Energy and Electricity.
How it is assessed
- Written exam: 1 hour 45 minutes
- Foundation and Higher Tier
- 100 marks
- 50% of GCSE
Upon successful completion of this one-year programme you may be able to study on an Access to HE course.
You will learn in the science laboratories with experienced and enthusiastic tutors. The Physics GCSE is taught 3 hours weekly at Ealing Green College.
