This qualification is designed to help you develop a basic understanding of what is required in the hair & beauty industry. It is aimed at people who want to see if hair and beauty is the career path for them as they are currently not in education, employment or training.
The course will give learners the opportunity to:
- have an introduction to the hair and beauty sector
- learn how to present a professional image in a salon.
You will be taught and assessed by highly qualified staff who have a wealth of up-to-date commercial and specialist teaching experience. Working in our commercial hairdressing and treatment salons, you will gain hands-on experience to prepare you for progressing on to a full level 1 course.

Age group: 16-18 Candidates will be invited to attend an interview where they can discuss their application. Candidates should be able to discuss the reason for their choice of Hair & Beauty.
Course Assessment will involve:
- Assignments
- Online exams
- Practical assessments
You will be able to progress onto a
- full Level 1 in Hair & Beauty, or
- Level 2 Hairdressing or Level 2 Beauty if you have 2-4 GCSE grade 4-9 (preferably including English and Maths), or
- a recognised Level 1 qualification.
You will develop the skills to help find a job such as:
- Salon Assistant/Apprentice
- Salon Receptionist - Part Time
- Retail Therapist
You will study 9 weeks of Hairdressing and 9 weeks of Beauty. The course involves practical skills demonstrations, practical participation, knowledge via online tests and assignments.
Units studied will include:
- UV10343 - Introduction to the hair and beauty sector - 3 credits
- UV10344 - Presenting a professional image in a salon - 3 credits
- UV30332 - Hand Care - 3 credits
- UV30335 - Skin Care - 3 credits
- UV30336 - Shampoo and conditioning - 3 credits
- UV30342 - Plaiting and twisting hair - 3 credits
You will practise practical skills in Hair & Beauty Salon and do research to provide evidence for your portfolio and to support completing underpinning requirements.
You will have a 2-hour tutorial slot each week to support you in setting targets for yourself, preparing a CV and creating a career flowchart.
School Leavers (16-18)
If you will be 16, 17 or 18 years old on 31 August before your course starts, and you have the legal right to live in the UK for the full length of your study programme, your course will be free.

If you will be aged 19 or older on 31 August before your course starts, are resident in London, and have the legal right to stay in the UK for at least 12 months, you may be eligible to study for free, depending on your circumstances and chosen course. For more information, please click here.
