What is CELTA?

CELTA is a Level 5 qualification for people with little or no previous teaching experience and opens up a whole world of exciting teaching opportunities. Because it is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, you can rely on its quality and recognition in this country and abroad.

Who is CELTA for?

CELTA is suitable for a wide range of people. It is especially ideal for those who want to:

  • Start a career in English language teaching
You may use CELTA as an entry into a good teaching position both here and in another country; you may also be a graduate wanting a qualification which provides a sound basis in the fundamentals of language teaching practice

  • Have a career change
CELTA gives you the training you need to help you adjust to a dynamic and challenging new profession. Many seek the exciting opportunities of living and working outside their own countries

  • Gain a qualification as they are already teaching English
CELTA can also be a useful qualification for teachers who have little previous formal training. CELTA sharpens your teaching practice, confirms your ability

  • Work in Further, Adult and Community Education in England and Wales
CELTA is also the first phase of the level 5 Diploma in Teaching English (ESOL) in the Lifelong Learning Sector. This qualification is required by teachers who wish to work in this sector in England and Wales
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

You will need to:

  • be at least 18 years old - it is generally recommended that candidates should be aged 20 or over, but candidates aged between 18 and 20 can be accepted at our discretion
  • have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English which will enable you to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels - the recommended candidate language level is C2 or C1+ on the CEFR
  • have suitable computer equipment, a stable broadband connection with ample bandwidth/data allowance and a level of digital literacy which will enable you to easily understand the technical requirements of the course, if it contains an online element
  • have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become an effective teacher and to successfully complete the written assignments and the assessment of teaching practice. You should normally have, as a minimum entry requirement, a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education (2 A Levels and 3 GCSEs, or equivalent) and have a command of English, both written and spoken, that enables you to follow the course and complete the assignments. If you do not hold formal qualifications, you may be considered after completing assessments to ensure you would be likely to complete the course successfully

You will be selected for interview on the basis of the standard of your application and pre-interview task. We cannot accept candidates with poor grammar or spelling. Please note: this means not all applicants will be called for interview.

ASSESSMENT METHOD

Assessment is continuous during the course, and all aspects of a trainee's work are taken into account. The certificate is an initial vocational qualification and trainees are required to show a professional attitude towards all aspects of the work involved. Course assessment is moderated by an external assessor appointed by the Cambridge Examinations Syndicate.

PROGRESSION OPPORTUNITIES

Most successful candidates secure teaching positions overseas, or in the UK.
You can also apply to follow the Diploma course in ELT (DELTA) after acquiring at least 2 years full time ELT teaching experience.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

This course offers a practical introduction to teaching English to adult learners. It covers key topics such as learner needs, language analysis, teaching skills, and lesson planning. The focus is on developing practical teaching techniques, and it includes teaching practice with real learners to help you gain confidence in a classroom setting.
